Only when my foot hit the ground in the Cancun airport did I begin to realize the journey I was about to embark upon. It was a three-month sea-kayak expedition to The Bay Islands of Honduras from Cancun, Mexico. My partner Colby Brinnon and I grabbed the Feathercraft kayaks, all the rest of the bags, hailed a cab, and went straight to the Hyatt to set out making last minute preparations. Three days later we were loading the boats on the beach in front of the Westin, which is the southernmost hotel on Cancuns "Hotel Row". On the first launch my boat was loaded beyond capacity. Feathercraft Kayaks are rated at about 350 pounds, which includes the paddler. We were each carrying over 400 pounds of food, gear, water, and other accessories. I took a good size wave in the face when I shoved off, and the gripping salt water took my sponge and water bottle. I waited for Colby out past the breakers, with my camera box between my legs and all the other supplies we would need for the next three months. He came paddling up with my sponge, water bottle, and a slight grin on his face. We both knew that paddling to Honduras would not be easy. |
